The 2nd Anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene is today
Fox 23– WXXA
Tropical Storm Irene left behind a path of destruction and millions of dollar in damage when it swept through the Northeast on August 28, 2011.
Schoharie County and areas of Vermont were some of the hardest hit areas. Irene brought heavy flooding that left homes, roads and businesses underwater.
Many communities are still rebuilding. The Schoharie Area Long-Term Recovery Committee, or SALT, says that 63 percent of homes have been rebuilt, but more work still needs to be done.
In Vermont, 500 miles of state roads were severely damaged or destroyed, and 100 bridges were completely wiped out.
Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin will tour some of the hardest hit areas in Wilmington. He says Vermont has made a lot of improvement since Irene hit, but there are still people with damaged homes trying to relocate or rebuild and businesses still trying to recover.
