The sky was threatening last Friday night as vendors gathered to set-up the Lasell Hall lawn with their wares. However, the spirits were high as the excitement built in anticipation of a wonderful evening of shopping, visiting, eating, and listening to music. And those expectations were definitely met!

The 18 vendors represented the true Bounty of Schoharie County. There were farm fresh eggs, honey, syrups, produce, flowers, chicken, goat cheese, and that famous “Island Tea” that everyone loves. There were wonderful fresh baguettes and sourdough boules, delicious cupcakes in several flavors, and numerous cookies to select for munching. There was locally produced wool in natural colors plus some wonderful handmade items knitted from the wool. There were also delicately patterned shawls and wraps created by a woman who developed her own patterns.

In addition there was a beautiful selection of handmade jewelry from glass, and repurposed and embellished clothing. If one needed a handy coat rack with shelf, they were available at the Bounty of the County marketplace. And for those needing natural skin-care items, one could choose from goat’s milk lotions or “the best bug spray I’ve ever used”, according to one woman who was buying some. A local meadery had a wide selection of beverages made from a honey base, while a local winery shared tastings of their numerous wines including a new one not yet on the market, “tomato wine”. Of course dinner was available from Middleburgers, a summertime favorite.

The market was livened up even more when the Schoharie Promotional’s Friday night concert began with the performance by “Mike and the Monsters”. SALT is grateful to the Schoharie Promotional organization for partnering with us for this successful event. And to the numerous vendors who participated, the volunteers who made the event possible, and the SALT VISTA volunteers who worked hard to coordinate the event. Once again, the power of positive collaboration among groups and individuals created a positive event for the community to gather, meet friends, and enjoy the Bounty of Schoharie County.

What! You missed it? It’s lucky for you that all of these fine producers are located right here in Schoharie County. Check the “Bounty of the County” page on the SALT website for a complete listing and enjoy shopping locally. See you at next year’s market!
