The AmeriCorps NCCC: National Civilian Community Corps’ mission statement is “To strengthen communities and develop leaders through team-based national and community service.” This organization is a branch of AmeriCorps, which also sponsors VISTAs, Senior Corps, and other programs that utilize volunteers to help improve communities across the country.

Currently, SALT has a group of 11 NCCCs orchestrated to work in the county for four weeks. These dedicated young people range in age from 18-24 years old, and represent eight different states: California, Illinois, Mississippi, Michigan, Georgia, New Mexico, Indiana, and Nebraska. By their charter, NCCC groups are able to give hands on assistance to areas where they serve.

This NCCC team, known as “Falcon 2,” has been working throughout Schoharie county since May 9th. So far they have supported Minekill state park, the town of Blenheim, the Village of Schoharie, and the Village of Sharon Springs. During their last two weeks in the area, they will continue assist in Sharon Springs, return to Blenheim, provide supports at Head Start, and also work in Middleburgh on the Little Schoharie project. Eleven people working eight hours per day (88 hours daily) for four weeks can accomplish a tremendous amount. Calculating it using the NYS rate for unskilled labor, that equals $2,464 worth of “unskilled” labor per day or $49,280 worth of free labor coming into the county during their four weeks of service!

SALT is grateful for their service and the work they are accomplishing. In addition, we are most appreciative of Pastor Jim Wolford and the Gallupville Gospel Church’s generosity for housing the group in addition to the Sholtes family who have accommodated shower facilities for the NCCC team during their stay.

This is another example of the value of collaborative partnerships whether they are local, regional, or national. The AmeriCorps Pledge states:

“I will get things done for America-
To make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.
I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.”

This team is truly living up to their pledge to get things done for America, and Schoharie County is benefiting. Thank you, Falcon 2!
