SALT Celebrates the Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service with a Volunteer Recognition Event

On Tuesday, April 5, SALT will hold an event to honor the volunteers who have worked with us since the 2011 flooding in Schoharie County from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. The event will be at the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church at 5:30 PM. If you would like to attend, please contact Tyler James at 518-702-5017 or tylerj@saltrecovery.org by this Friday, April 1.

The annual recognition ceremony will take place on the fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service. Celebrated with public events and media recognition, this national commemoration day highlights the positive impacts of service work and citizen engagement. Last year, 2,786 mayors and county officials representing over 150 million citizens across the country participated. The Mayor and County Recognition Day acknowledges the value of citizens making our communities better places to live.

Since the disasters in Schoharie County in 2011, thousands of volunteers have come out to support SALT. Much of our day-to-day work and projects, including flood recovery, preparedness efforts such as Kits for Kids and Hope for the Homebound, and beautification and cleanup projects, have been successful because of our hardworking supporters. SALT has benefited from community members of all ages, AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTAs), and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCCs). We’ve also had numerous groups of citizens travel to Schoharie from outside the county and the state to complete service projects. If it were not for the volunteers’ selfless efforts to assist with recovery and renewal, Schoharie County would not have been able to recover to the degree that it has.

SALT’s Volunteer Recognition Ceremony will feature speeches from local government officials and members of the SALT staff. Generous donations from area restaurants will be served. We look forward to bringing together those who have served with us over the years to revitalize our communities.

The Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service is sponsored by The National League of Cities, National Association of Counties, Cities of Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
