MIDDLEBURGH, N.Y. — An organization that’s been fighting to rebuild Schoharie County after tropical storms Irene and Lee is getting the financial backing it needs to help families still in need.

“We’ve had volunteers in here for the last few weeks gutting out the place,” said Christopher Small of AmeriCorps.

Mud still on doors, and many homes still bare after flooding devastated Schoharie County nearly two years ago.

“It’s disheartening of course,” said Small.

It’s been a small group of staff and thousands of volunteers known as SALT, rebuilding one home at a time.

“Today we did some mold remediation. We’re hoping to be able to get some electricity and some heating and some plumbing and then we’re going to start putting the walls back up,” said Small.

Many more hoping to return home are still asking for help.

“Right now we have 75 in cue so to speak that have been approved for assistance and will be receiving that assistance through the next month or so,” said Sarah Goodrich with SALT.

SALT has helped 200 families return home so far, but a large amount of people and businesses are still displaced.

“We’ve also learned in a recent survey that we completed that there’s at least 33 percent of the area that’s not back,” said Goodrich.
