SCHOHARIE — It’s been five years since Tropical Storm Irene made landfall, causing devastation in parts of the Capital Region.

On Sunday, Schoharie Area Long Term, or SALT, held an event to celebrate the county’s tremendous progress over the last five years, and look towards the future.

Organizers say while many groups came in to help out, it was the community that laid the groundwork for long term progress.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been five years,” said SALT Executive Director Sarah Goodrich. “But it’s so important to recognize all the achievements and the people that have made the difference. They have stepped up. They’ve kept their eye on the dream, our vision for the future, for a positive future. Because of that, we are where we are today.”

SALT so far has raised $2 million dollars, and helped 600 homes.
