Q: Who are you, and where are you from?
A: My name is Joanna and I grew up outside of Buffalo, NY.

Q: What position are you in at SALT?

A:I am serving as the special event coordinator for SALT.

Q: Why did you choose to be a VISTA at SALT?
A: For a few years I have been thinking about how to start a career in public service that can serve both people in need and my personal interests. I believe that working at SALT will give me that opportunity. I chose SALT specifically because of its emphasis on community engagement and mitigating both social and environmental issues.

Q: How do you think you will build capacity in Schoharie County in your position?
A: I think I will make meaningful contributions to SALT’s events and event planning by bringing my perspective and background to SALT. I hope to expand both public engagement and education in the community.

Q: What social or world issues are most important to you?
A: I find many issues important. I am very concerned about climate change and environmental justice, as well as their intersections with social issues such as poverty. Additionally, I find the current migration movement in the Middle East and Europe and the Syrian conflict very important.

Q: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about Schoharie since you’ve arrived?
A: I’ve learned that a lot of towns in this area have names derived from Dutch. This is interesting to me because I spent some time last year studying in the Netherlands.
