Mark Graham, right, of Max London’s Restaurant & Bar in Saratoga Springs took the judges’ award and Will Brown of Mazzone Hospitality was the people’s-choice favorite at the second annual Brewery Ommegang Hop Chef Challenge, held Friday evening at the Hilton Albany in downtown Albany. Seven Capital Region chefs prepared a dish incorporating and paired with a a beer from Ommegang.
The competition was part of campaign by the brewery called Great Beer Deserves Great Food. Four such regional competitions are being held — in Albany, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago — and Graham will compete against the other winning chefs in a finale during the brewery’s Belgium Comes to Cooperstown festival in August. Proceeds from the Albany competition will benefit Schoharie Area Long Term, a nonprofit dedicated to helping victims of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, which devastated the Schoharie Creek Basin in late summer 2011. Ommegang presented a $2,000 check to SALT on Friday.
