Hope for the Homebound

In 2014, Schoharie Area Long Term, Schoharie County Office of Emergency Services and AmeriCorps VISTA spearheaded a project to make Emergency Ready Kits for 200 “homebound” residents of Schoharie County.

A “homebound” resident could be someone who is suffering from a physical ailment or a medical condition, they could be isolated from their neighbors or have no family to check on them, or it could be a single parent who relies on public transportation. The objective of this pilot program was to ensure that not only did these residents learn how to be prepared, but more importantly that they be given the opportunity to be prepared.

Over 30 organizations participated in this pilot program by hosting a drop-box location, donating money, or donating one or more of the items being collected. Over 4,000  items and $3,000 in cash were collected, which allowed us to assemble all 200 Emergency Ready Kits with the help of the Schoharie County ARC. The kits were dispersed among the Cobleskill-Richmondville School District, HEAD Start, and the Office for the Aging.
