There is a chill in the air and the last few leaves are slowly fluttering down. For many of us the latter half of November signals an indoor hibernation that lasts until the spring thaw. Despite the cold weather getting outside is key to staying happy and healthy. Studies have shown that outdoor activities can help combat seasonal affective disorder (the winter blues) and are a great way to exercise and stay in shape.

Upstate New York has a huge variety of fun outdoor winter activities:

  • Visit one of New York’s dozens of ski centers to enjoy premier downhill skiing or snowboarding. New to skiing? Most centers offer classes in this fun and exciting winter activity.

  • Snowmobiling is a popular pastime for many! New York has an extensive network of professionally groomed trails that are maintained by local snowmobiling clubs. In Schoharie County these include: the Sharon Pathfinders, the Summit Sno Riders, the Cave Country Riders, and the Middleburgh Ridge Runners. If you live in the country chances are you are just a few miles from a trail network!

  • Fishing doesn’t have to end with the start of winter. Try ice-fishing on a local pond or lake. Be sure to check ice thickness before heading out onto the ice.

  • Find the nearest hill and grab a sled. No one is ever too old for a little sledding!
