Celebrate Earth Day 2016

On April 21, 2016, Posted by , In Blog, With No Comments

Friday, April 22, is Earth Day, a time to show support for protecting the natural environment. Founded in 1970, Earth Day began with millions of people participating in demonstrations that brought environmental concerns, such as air and water pollution, into mainstream awareness. Momentum from the first Earth Day led to passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, as well as the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Numerous events in Schoharie County will recognize environmental awareness. On Saturday, April 23, from 10:00-2:00, Schoharie Free Library will have an Earth Day Fair with paper-making, DIY reusable bags, recycling, a seed swap, and music. Cobleskill’s Earth Day Celebration will be on Saturday, April 30. It includes a village clean-up from 10:00-12:00 and the Fish & Wildlife Festival from 10:00-2:00 at the Veterans Memorial Center Park. The festival will have a wildlife show, reptile exhibits, arts and crafts, fish fry, a bake sale, and more. SALT will also be tabling to share information on our current programs, such as the Trail Feasibility Study.

In May, SALT will host a Great American Cleanup event with Keep Mohawk Valley Beautiful to revitalize Schoharie’s Lasell Park. (More information to come.) SALT’s mission to build resilient and sustainable communities includes a commitment to the environment. We hope that you will help us by getting out and celebrating Earth Day this year!
