The Albany Chefs’ Food and Wine Festival has teamed with Schoharie Area Long Term, Inc. (SALT) to raise funds to help Schoharie County recover from the devastating flooding of 2011. While SALT has managed to raise one million dollars privately (no government funding here, folks!) to help those affected get back into their homes, the target goal is three million.
To assist with the fundraising, 12 chefs from the Capital Region will prepare a six-course dinner using ingredients from Schoharie farmers and food artisans at the Bounty of the County event. The event takes place on June 29th at The Carrot Barn at Schoharie Valley Farms. The concept is similar to the dinner gala presented each January at the Albany Chefs’ Food and Wine Festival Wine and Dine for the Arts, and a silent auction and live entertainment will accompany dinner.
On Monday, I joined a group of farmers, food artisans, and chefs at Barber’s Farm in Middleburgh to tour how the farm has recovered from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. The chefs and producers were able to mingle, then the chefs gathered at Brewery Ommegang for a tour and more education about the impact flooding had on the region. Duvel Moortgat USA, Ltd., is the parent company of Brewery Ommegang and a Bounty of the County sponsor. “The fact that we’re part of the beautiful region that Schoharie touches makes our support a natural fit,” says Jake Feltenberger, Market Manager for Duvel.
I’ll be at the Bounty of the County dinner, and I hope you’ll consider joining, too. Sarah Goodrich, Executive Director of SALT, said, “SALT’s work is not about rebuilding buildings. It is about people, plain and simple. It is our goal to help these good people return home and feel safe and secure again.” Let’s all be good neighbors to our friends in Schoharie and show our support.
