A Successful Geo to Go Kickoff Meeting!

Last Tuesday, March 29, SUNY Cobleskill hosted SALT’s Geo to Go project kickoff meeting. Stakeholders representing the artistic, cultural, historic, business, and recreational communities in Schoharie County participated. We graciously thank SUNY Cobleskill for hosting the generous continental breakfast occasion. We also extend our thanks to Dr. Marion Terenzio, President of the college, for hosting and for her enthusiastic introduction that referenced her passion for cultivating the creative marketplace.

The kickoff meeting allowed stakeholders to learn more about the Geo to Go website and the different trails that will be featured in the augmented reality (AR) mobile application slated to be complete by late 2016. The Geo to Go project leaders, including Dr. Lillian Spina-Caza of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Dr. Ellen McHale of the New York Folklore Society, gave a presentation. Dr. Spina-Caza, who came up with the Geo to Go concept, explained the benefits of AR. According to her, AR will allow the website and mobile app to feature interactive trail maps with educational content that residents and tourists can use to explore points of interest in the county. Theoretically, an individual will be able to walk through the county while using the app for guidance and information. The forum afforded time for valuable input from participants about area points of interest to include, content to incorporate, and audiences to target. SALT also welcomed input regarding concerns from audience members–we recognize that great value is added to a project by identifying challenges and collectively brainstorming solutions.

Up next, SALT and partners will hold public forums to collect content for the website. We will map content for the Quilt Barn Trail, transcribe oral histories in the county, and develop the website interface. The website and mobile app are slated to be launched in the winter of this year.

SALT is excited to move forward with Geo to Go as we continue to facilitate collaborative community renewal and economic development projects in Schoharie County. Thank you to all who participated! We appreciate our project partners’ work as we all make a continued effort for regional success.
